Police shoot and kill man slashing with a machete in Quebec

Quebec’s independent investigations bureau (BEI) is investigating a incident outside Quebec City area Sûreté du Québec station.

Police received a complaint of a man slashing on Sunday, which led up to a unknown man being shot and killed by police officers after he refused to drop the machete.

According to information received by the BEI, the chain of events leading up to the shooting in the parking lot of the SQ’s Pont-Rouge detachment began sometime after 12 p.m., when a man entered the station to file a complaint concerning another individual.

Three hours later, the individual against whom the complaint had been filed showed up in the station’s parking lot and began slashing at cars with a machete.

Officers unsuccessfully tried to subdue the man with pepper spray. When he then approached them, still holding the machete, they opened fire.

The man was later declared dead in hospital.

The BEI, which is called in when an injury or death occurs during a police operation, has assigned nine investigators to the case and is verifying the version of events they’ve been provided with by witnesses.
